History of Eight & Bob’s Original Eau de Parfum Scent The history behind the popularity of Eight & Bob’s Original Eau de Parfum (and in turn their Original Deodorant) is interesting. Albert Fouquet, the son of a Parisian aristocrat, was part of the elite French society in the early twentieth century and a perfume connoisseur. In a room on the upper floor of his family’s chateau, Fouquet perfected various essences for his own personal use, aided in the process by the family’s butler, Philippe. Then, Albert would surprise everyone at social events with exquisite fragrances that quickly became in demand items within the exclusive social circles he frequented. One night during his summer vacation in 1937 on the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur), Albert met and got on very well with a young American student who was touring France in a convertible car. The student’s name was John F. Kennedy. Like the French socialites, JFK was also captivated by the essence that Albert wore and persuaded him to leave him a sample of his cologne. Later, Albert received a letter from JFK, thanking him and informing him of the success the scent was having in the US among Kennedy’s friends. Also, reluctant to let go of the scent, in the letter, JFK requested that Albert send him eight samples “and if your production allows, another one for Bob”, where JFK was referring to his (also famous) brother. A perfectionist, Albert didn’t fill JFK’s order until Philippe the Butler found some extraordinarily beautiful glass bottles in a Parisian pharmacy to perfect the cologne’s look and feel. To honor JFK, Albert also ordered several boxes that were decorated with the same pattern as the shirt that JFK was wearing when they met, then labeling the bottles and boxes with a reference John’s request: “Eight & Bob”. The story doesn’t end there, as Albert was very surprised a few months later when he began receiving urgent letters from America, from various Hollywood directors, producers, and actors such as Cary Grant and James Stewart, all requesting bottles of his “Eight & Bob” cologne. It turned out that it was JFK’s father, who had long been part of the Hollywood producing industry, who had introduced the scent to movie stars and American celebrities. Albert died in an automobile accident near Biarritz, France, in Spring of 1939, which stopped the fragrance’s success story in its tracks. Philippe the Butler, the only person who could handle the orders, continued with the work for only a few months, with the start of World War II forcing him to leave his job with the Fouquet family. In the final shipments, Philippe hid the bottles inside books that he carefully cut by hand to prevent the Nazis from seizing the cologne. Today, decades later, thanks to the efforts by the family of Philippe the Butler, the unique formula for “Eight & Bob” has been completely recovered, along with its carefully crafted production process. Once again, the scent has received a well-deserved status as one of the most exclusive colognes, preferred by the world’s most elegant people.
